In some Latin American countries and in the Iberian Peninsula, the term epicure is applied for simplification to people who like good food and the tasting of refined and exclusive food or drinks. The term becomes, in such a case, synonymous with gourmet.

The word “sybarite” comes from Sibaris, a city of Magna Graecia, destroyed around 510 BC. C. The inhabitants of Sibaris were recognized for their inclination to luxury and leisure. The connoisseur is distinguished, fundamentally, by the pleasure obtained through the use, possession, or consumption of certain rare, exclusive, and, generally, high-value goods, which are usually related to a certain concept of elegance or worldly prestige.
